Strobe Talk Part One: Video Lights vs Strobes and what makes a good strobe

If you’d like to watch the first of my Facebook Live videos click on the picture below. In this one I talked about strobes (underwater flashes) including how they got their name, the difference between video lights and strobes for underwater photography, combined video lights/LED strobes and what makes a good strobe . I’ll put some relevant links to more information, products etc below the picture.

If you like the look of the Fourth Element Xerotherm Beanie Hat that I briefly wear during the talk you can buy them direct from Fourth Element.

If you are interested in the SUPE combined video light/LED strobe we are a dealer. Email info@alphamarinephoto.com for a current price and to make an order. More info can be found on SUPE’s website.

We are an INON dealer and these are the strobes we recommend for most purposes. Use the email above to get prices etc. I did a tour of the Inon S2000 in a follow up chat and then the rest of the current INON range and many of their earlier strobes in another.

I’ve also written a blog about video lights versus strobes that you may find helpful.

For a written blog about TTL and also the S2000 magnet go to my Underwater Photography FAQ’s Part Two. In part three of my underwater photography FAQs I talk about Guide Numbers, diffusers and sync speed.

I did briefly mention camera filters to use for bio-luminescence photography in a blog I did about filters a while ago.

For more about snoots have a read of Macro Musings Part 3: Getting Snooty.

We can supply fibre optic cables to work with almost any strobes and those housings that support fibre optic strobe triggering.

We are members of a number of affiliate programmes including Amazon and Wex Photo/Video. This means that if you click through a link on the website to one of these companies and make a purchase we get a small share of the sale which helps to fund the running of the blog, Facebook Live videos and our Facebook Q and A group. Below this post are banners for the two camera companies we are affiliated to.

I’m now doing Facebook Live videos on like the one featured in this blog on the Alphamarine Photography page most Thursdays at 8pm BST. Subjects are varied and all are welcome to watch and comment. If you found this video useful and would like to support us you can ‘buy me a coffee’.
